6 Fall Read Alouds Your Kids Will Love

Need some great read aloud books for fall? Try The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, Gobble Gobble Mr. Wobble, The Scarecrow, Thanksgiving at the Tappletons, Otis and the Scarecrow, and Leif and the Fall.

Falling leaves, cool air, and football games are a few of the things I love about fall. However, fall read alouds are among my favorites. Picture books, however, are at the top of the list when it comes to my fall favorites.  Here are a few of my go-to books for fall.

Gobble Gobble Mr. Wobble

6 Fall Read Alouds Your Kids Will Love

This humorous story begins when Wobble the turkey is invited to Thanksgiving dinner with the farmer’s family! Wobble is thrilled to have the honor of joining the family at the dinner table. His friends are sure that Wobble doesn’t quite understand what the invitation means. When the big day comes, they try to lure him away from the farm to save his life. Your students will not be expecting what happens when Mr. Wobble goes into the house for dinner. Neither will you!

The illustrations in this book are great for making inferences with illustrations.

Thanksgiving at the Tappletons’

6 Fall Read Alouds Your Kids Will Love

On Thanksgiving Day, Mrs. Tappleton’s turkey slipped right out of her hands into the yard, into the street, and into the pond. Then, it was one unfortunate event after another until they had no Thanksgiving dinner to eat. But don’t worry, they had some lovely sandwiches and were thankful to have each other. This oldy but goody is the perfect book for talking about gratitude.

The Scarecrow

6 Fall Read Alouds Your Kids Will Love

When a baby crow falls from its nest, a lonely scarecrow picks it up and gently tucks it into his overalls. But when the crow grows up and flies away, the scarecrow is alone once again. Through the seasons, the broken-hearted scarecrow stands in the field. When the crow returns the following spring, it has a nice surprise for the scarecrow.

Leif and the Fall

6 Fall Read Alouds Your Kids Will Love

Leif is a worried leaf. Why? He is afraid to fall. He comes up with several plans to ease the fall. First, he builds a net with twigs, but the holes in the net are too big. He knew he would fall right through, so he just tosses it to the ground. Every plan he comes up with has a problem and gets tossed to the ground. When the wind begins to blow and Leif begins to fall, what will happen to him?

I recently discovered Story Time with Andy on YouTube! She has lots of read-aloud and draw along videos to go with picture books. Your students will love her reading of this book and the drawing activity that follows.

Otis and the Scarecrow

6 Fall Read Alouds Your Kids Will Love

Otis and the Scarecrow is a great book for teaching empathy. Otis is a friendly tractor who wants to welcome a scarecrow to the farm, but the scarecrow just stands there no matter what. Otis finally decides to sit silently by the scarecrow and keep him company. Sometimes that’s all we need…someone who cares.

The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush

How did this beautiful flower come to be? Little Gopher is smaller than the other boys. He is unable to be a great warrior, but he has his own special talent. Find out how he got his new name, He Who Brought the Sunset to the Earth, in this beautifully illustrated book by Tomie dePaola.

Story Time with Andy has a read-aloud and draw along video for this book.

What are some of your favorite fall read-aloud books? I love adding to my list!
